LIPIMC holds living collections of filamentous fungi (mold), yeast, and bacteria having important taxonomical data and physiological characters of mediating bio-processes in food, health, pesticide, fertilizer, and bioremediation for improving the quality of human life.
The main objective of the culture collection is to faciltate ex-situ conservation of Indonesian microbial resources, to provide microbial resources for research, and aimed at optimizing its potential use for national and international interest, and as one of important infrastructure of national research system and biotechnology. Institutionally LIPI is mandated to create a strategic plan to study and conserve Indonesian biodiversity, including microorganisms.

Several functions of LIPIMC include as a library or depository of microorganism and its genetic materials (mainly Indonesia origin) used in scientific purposes (research and academic) and industrial purposes, and as a data source of microbial taxonomy
LIPIMC is permitted to nationally or internationally exchange biological materials in the form of culture collection among culture collection centers, and other institutions especially aimed at enriching microbial collection and for research purposes. Culture collection exchange must comply with Material Transfer Agreement = MTA as described in Appendix 3. Culture exchange fee is regulated by memorandum of understanding signed by both parties
Joint research collaboration between LIPIMC and other parties with the use of culture collection of each party or both parties is encouraged and followed regulation through memorandum of understanding as described in appendix 4.
